How to fix one line in an AI audiobook without redoing the chapter
You listen to chapter seven and it is almost perfect. Then one line lands wrong. A question that should rise falls flat, a character shouts a sentence that should be whispered, or the stress sits on the wrong word and changes the meaning. Re-narrating the chapter for one sentence feels like a waste, and you might lose parts you liked.
In VoicedBook you can record just that sentence again. The rest of the chapter keeps the audio you already approved, and the old take is kept in case the new one is not better. This guide shows when to use it, how it works and what it costs.
First, pick the right fix
Not every problem needs a new recording. Match the fix to the cause:
| What you hear | Best fix |
|---|---|
| A name or term is said wrong, every time | Add it to the pronunciation dictionary. Only the passages that contain it are narrated again. |
| The text itself is wrong (a typo, a sentence you want to change) | Edit the manuscript. Unchanged passages keep their audio. |
| Words are skipped or misread | Usually caught for you: every passage is checked against your text and retaken automatically. |
| The words are right but the delivery is not | Record that line again, with a short direction. |
The last row is what this guide is about: emphasis, tone, pacing, a flat line of dialogue, a laugh in the wrong place.
Step by step
1. Find the line on the Review page
Open the chapter on the Review page. The chapter is split into passages of up to about 300 words, each with its own Play button. Play the passage that holds the line.
2. Press Fix a line and pick the sentences
Press Fix a line next to the passage. Its text appears sentence by sentence. Click the sentence you want to record again. To take more than one, click the last one too and everything between is selected. You can select up to 150 words.
3. Add a direction if you want one
The new take uses the book's voice, pace and pronunciations, like the rest of the chapter. If you know what was wrong, say it in a few words: "slower", "quieter, almost to herself", "rising, as a real question", "with a dry smile". The direction applies to this take only and does not change your book settings.
4. Record it again
Press Record again. The button shows the price before you start. Within about half a minute the new take is in place: VoicedBook records the sentence with the text around it as context, checks that it reads your words exactly, cuts it into the existing audio at the natural pauses, matches the volume, and checks the whole passage once more.
5. Listen, and switch back if you prefer
Play the passage again. If the old take was better after all, press Use previous take. You can switch between the two as often as you like. If the chapter was already mastered, master it again (Export also does this for you) so the chapter file includes the change.
What it costs
A retake is charged for the words of the passage at the normal narration rate of $3 per 1,000 words, with a minimum of $0.10. Fixing a ten-word line costs $0.10; a 60-word paragraph costs $0.18. It is paid from your wallet.
You are only charged when the new take passes the check. If anything goes wrong, nothing in your audio changes and nothing is charged.
When to regenerate the whole passage instead
Sometimes a whole passage is off: the energy is wrong from start to finish, or you changed the voice settings. Use Regenerate for that. It records the passage again at the normal rate for its words, and it also keeps the previous take, so you can compare and switch back the same way.
Limits worth knowing
- Whole sentences only. A retake replaces complete sentences, never half of one, so the join always falls in a natural pause.
- A pause is needed at each end. Narrators pause between nearly all sentences. When two sentences run together with no pause, the retake stops before recording and tells you; select the neighbouring sentence as well and try again.
- Same voice settings. If you changed the narrator voice or style after this passage was recorded, regenerate the passage instead, so the chapter does not switch voices halfway.
- Character voices. A line of dialogue is recorded in the character's voice and the narration around it stays with the narrator. This works with studio voices and cloned voices. See multi-voice audiobooks for how characters are cast.
A listening routine that keeps fixes cheap
- Narrate the first chapter only and listen to all of it before narrating the rest. Most problems repeat, and repeating problems belong in the voice settings or the pronunciation dictionary.
- Narrate the remaining chapters.
- Listen chapter by chapter and note the lines that land wrong.
- Fix those lines one by one with a direction each, then master and export.
Common questions
What does it cost to record a line again?
The words of the passage at the normal narration rate of $3 per 1,000 words, with a minimum of $0.10 per retake. It is paid from your wallet, and you are charged only if the new take passes the word for word check.
Can I go back to the old take?
Yes. The take that was replaced is kept. Press Use previous take on the Review page to switch back, and press it again to switch forward.
Does it work with character voices and cloned voices?
Yes. The new take uses the voice that speaks that sentence, whether it is the narrator, a character voice or a cloned voice.
How long can the passage be?
Whole sentences, up to 150 words at a time. For more, regenerate the whole passage block instead; that keeps the previous take too.
What if the line cannot be cut out cleanly?
Lines are cut at the natural pauses between sentences. If two sentences run together without a pause, the retake stops before anything is recorded and nothing is charged. Select the neighbouring sentence as well and try again.
Listen, then fix only what needs it.
Upload a manuscript, audition a narrator on your own chapter and narrate. Auditions are included in the price.
