How to make an AI audiobook in Spanish, French, German or Portuguese

· 6 min read

Most AI narration tools are built for English first. Feed them a Spanish novel and the voice may be fine, but the rest of the pipeline is not: dialogue that opens with a dash is read as narration, a French chapter drifts into a Canadian accent, and a word for word check written for English stumbles over accents and guillemets.

VoicedBook now narrates books in Spanish, French, German and Portuguese as well as English, and every step knows how books in those languages are written. This guide covers what changes, what stays the same, and how to get a native sounding result.

What you get in each language

LanguageAccents you can chooseDialogue it understands
SpanishSpain, Latin America, or follow the textDialogue dashes (—Hola —dijo Pablo—), «comillas»

The price is the same in every language: $3 per 1,000 manuscript words for the initial narration, with analysis, auditions, the word for word check, mastering and export packages included.

Step by step

1. Upload the book in its own language

Upload a PDF, EPUB or Word file, the same as for an English book. The structure analysis finds chapters, front matter and back matter in any of these languages, including headings such as Capítulo, Chapitre, Kapitel and Prólogo.

2. Check the language on the Voice page

The analysis detects the language of the book and sets the narration language for you, and the export metadata gets the same language code. On the Voice page you can pick a regional accent. This matters more than it sounds: in our tests a French text without a region was sometimes read with a Canadian accent, while French (France) gave a standard Parisian reading every time. If your Spanish book is set in Mexico or Argentina, choose Latin America; for a novel from Madrid, choose Spain.

3. Audition on your own chapter

The studio voices speak all of these languages with a native accent. Auditions are free, so try two or three voices on a chapter with dialogue before you decide.

4. Give the characters their voices

Press Find speakers on the Voice page. It finds the dialogue the way your language writes it. In Spanish and Portuguese, a paragraph that opens with a dash is a line of speech, and the tag between dashes stays with the narrator:

—Aguarda, hija, no vayas tan a prisa —dijo Golfín deteniéndose—. Déjame encender un cigarro.

Here “Aguarda, hija…” and “Déjame encender…” go to Golfín's voice and “dijo Golfín deteniéndose” is read by the narrator. German »Anführungszeichen« and French « guillemets » work the same way. See multi-voice audiobooks for how casting works.

5. Add the names that need help

The pronunciation dictionary works in every language. It is most useful for names from another language than the book's own, such as an English brand in a German thriller or a Basque surname in a Spanish novel. Write the respelling the way a reader of your book would say it.

6. Narrate and listen

Every passage is transcribed and compared with your text, word for word, and retaken automatically if anything is skipped or changed. The comparison ignores accent marks and old spellings that sound the same, so a classic text spelled “póde” or “daß” is checked as fairly as a modern one. Then master and export as usual.

What we tested

Before turning this on we narrated chapters from public domain classics in each language: Galdós (Spanish), Dumas and Verne (French), Kafka (German) and Machado de Assis (Portuguese). Every passage passed the word for word check, and an independent listening check rated the accent native in all four languages. Spanish dialogue with dashes was split correctly between the narrator and two characters.

Limits worth knowing

  • No translation. VoicedBook reads the text you upload. To make a Spanish audiobook of an English book, upload the Spanish edition.
  • One language per book. A short foreign phrase inside the text is fine, but a book that switches language chapter by chapter is not supported yet.
  • The app is in English. The interface and emails are in English for now; the narration and the files are in the language of your book.
  • Check your store's language list. Each retailer decides which languages it accepts for AI narrated audiobooks. Check before you submit.
